Lindsley Brooks | Lifestyle Alchemist
Lindsley Brooks shares a journey of connecting her energetic passions of space, place, and style with her work now as a lifestyle alchemist. We talk a lot about "thin places," travel, and "What is Loving You." Lindsley and I share a deep certainty that what the Universe offers is exactly what we need. I love connecting the dots with this gorgeous and vibrant soul.
What is your soul+work?
As a lifestyle alchemist, I help people bring more beauty, consciousness and harmony into their living space, personal style.
How did you jump from a career real estate to becoming a lifestyle alchemist?
I have always been sensitive to the energy of people and places. I called this a "vibe" before I knew anything about energy. In college, I was drawn to spaces and seemed to have a knack for finding myself and friends cool places to live. I loved architecture, interior design and pairing people with the “right” home, which is why I originally got into the real estate business.
Feng shui didn’t come into my life until after I’d been selling real estate for a few years. I loved real estate. I owned my own real estate company and was the sales director and broker for a large traditional neighborhood development and community in Nashville. I helped with every part of the process: design, building and selling… but when the 2008 market crash happened the community, my company was hit hard. I was so heart broken and burned out with all things real estate that I questioned my career and purpose.
"So many of us are sleep walking or living in reaction mode to our lives. The goal isn’t to do it perfectly. Its about setting up your life to be congruent with your true self and intention."
I started reading everything I could get my hands on about spirituality and how to find your purpose. I hired a life coach who introduced me to words like “the universe” and “energy”. At the time, those words were revolutionary to me since I had been raised in a very traditional Christian home. That process and journey opened me to a whole new world of spirituality and entirely new career. During that time, I was also introduced to the word “feng shui” and my passions all started to make sense. Feng shui gave me a language for what I had already been doing intuitively with design, spaces, and people for my whole lie.
In retrospect, I can see that I didn’t go looking for feng shui, instead, it seemed to be looking for me. I now call that process “what’s loving you?” Its when you pay attention to what’s coming across your path and what’s trying to get your attention, trusting that this is actually the way the Universe teaches you and gives direction... like “North” on a compass.
So, what's loving you? What's inspiring you?
A few years ago I started traveling, researching and writing about thin places. A thin place is a celtic term used to describe the place between heaven and earth is the thinnest. I’ve been traveling all over the world to document my search and discover how to recreate them. More and more I realized these thin places are not just physical places, but parts of our own soul. I bring that sense of a thin place into creating sacred spaces in every day life.
"Time seemed to stand still the whole trip. The whole experience felt like a coming home - to the land, each other and ourselves."
Tell us about your most recent adventure to Avalon.
Avalon is considered one of the most sacred places in the world - a true thin place. The Chalice Well Gardens are one of the only places in the world where the masculine and feminine ley lines intersect. Ley lines are the earth's meridian system, also called the Michael ley lines in the Mary ley lines, in honor of St. Michael and the Virgin Mary. It is also said that these "eternal youth" waters sprang forth after the chalice cup from the last supper was buried here. This area is also the center of King Arthur legends. Wells often featured in Celtic traditions are gateways to the spirit world or what I would call a thin place. The sacred symbol of the Vesica Piscis (shown on the cover of the well) represents the overlapping of the inner and outer world.
This trip was also part of a sacred divine feminine pilgrimage that I took with 20 women from around the world led by author and spiritual teacher, Rebecca Campbell, and Angelic Breath-worker, Madeline Giles. It was a powerful time of honoring the essence of the feminine, communing with nature and connecting with like-minded women. We emerged ourselves into the sacred work of ceremony and ritual, allowing ourselves to do deep soul work.
I remember sitting in the circle our first night together, it felt more like a reunion than a meeting for the first time. Time seemed to stand still the whole trip. The whole experience felt like a coming home - to the land, each other and ourselves.
You've experienced so many things recently, but I'm curious. What got in the way of you fulfilling your calling for so many years?
I had all these different passions and interests in my life and I was enjoying all of them but I couldn’t figure out how they fit together. I intuited that these dots connected somehow but i couldn’t figure out how. Sometimes when your looking too hard you can’t see what’s right in front of you. It’s like looking at a constellation in the sky, what makes it come alive is when you connect the next star and the next star until all of the sudden you can see the whole shape taking form.
I love that image of a constellation. I like to imagine things and people in my life in the night sky as a meditation :) What does soul+work mean to you now?
It means conscious living. It means being intentional in everything I do - from what I wear, what I items I bring into my home, what I eat, who I hang out with, and what I put into my psyche. So many of us are sleep walking or living in reaction mode to our lives. The goal isn’t to do it perfectly. Its about setting up your life to be congruent with your true self and intention.
We've talked a lot about your personal practice, but I'd love to share your work with our peeps. What would you like to show us?
Here are a few photos from behind the scenes as creative director for my Intuitive Image Design photoshoot.
